In the 1970’s and 1980’s, I was an evangelical right-wing activist fighting against women’s rights and gay rights and the rise of what we called, “secular humanism.” My father, a famous evangelical leader, has been credited with the founding of the evangelical, anti-abortion movement that has fought now for more than 40 years to overturn Roe v. Wade and women’s access to abortion.
I fled the movement in the 1980’s, disgusted with the ugliness and bigotry, unable to contemplate spending the rest of my life in this movement just because of a nepotistic connection with an evangelist father.
This is my background. This was my life.
Fast forward to the present. I would like to warn Americans; Democrats, Independents, and others who are not fundamentalist Christians of what I see as the real political danger facing the United States right now.
You can ignore me, you can listen, you can not listen, you can disagree, but I’m asking you to give me a couple minutes and hear me out, because the media, in general, just don’t pay enough attention, not to the rise of religious fundamentalism, but to its decline.
