Guns-n’-God White Evangelicals Just Don’t Care

By Frank Schaeffer

The Boulder gunman, 21, who has history of ‘paranoia’ and mental illness HAD NO PROBLEM BUYING A MILITARY STYLE MASS MURDER WEAPON just days before using it.

This was because a Republican evangelical church-going judge BLOCKED Boulder from enforcing a 2018 ban on assault weapons— less than two weeks before gunman bought his gun and killed 10 with an ‘AR-15 rifle’ at grocery store.

The deaths won’t spur action to make the guns harder to get, or to make the guns less efficient, or to ban military weapons’ from our streets  because pro-death White evangelical Republicans are 2 things: A Trump cult rejecting an election result they don’t like and a gun cult embracing mass death as evidence of their individualistic rights.

Here’s what guns-n’-God White evangelicals believe:
The self is everything! It’s freedom and liberty whims and desires and-uh… church. Community doesn’t extend beyond my front door. Everything else is someone else’s problem. Guns define us as Americans-not democracy, justice or life.

544,000 coronavirus deaths didn’t motivate mask-less Trump evangelicals to protect their neighbors. They haven’t cared about gun deaths either of schoolchildren or even people in the midst of prayer. Evangelical Republicans stubbornly embrace others’ deaths as their idea of personal freedom.

“Why” another mass shooting? Ask the GOP/NRA/Gun Lobby/Voter Suppressing/Court-Stacking/Pro-Shooter-Mass-Murdering-Terrorist-Coddling-Money-Corrupted Republican members of Congress and the one voting group that keeps them in power: White Evangelicals. America doesn’t have a gun problem, we have an evangelical problem.

Frank Schaeffer spent years as an evangelical activist pushing the right wing version of “family values.” These weren’t really family values at all but rather an anti-feminist agenda. In fact the far right opposes family togetherness by opposing child care, day care, working mothers, a high minimum wage, access to contraceptives and the right to choose. Frank walked away from a position of leadership in the evangelical world more than 30 years ago to become a successful author and progressive activist.  Now in Frank’s new book he lays out the real and practical affirmation of actual family values and the programs and ideas that will strengthen families and give everyone a better chance to experience love.

Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief over a friend’s death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing in God—an atheist who prays. Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief, sharing his innermost thoughts with a lyricism that only great writers of literary nonfiction achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose love for his family, art and life trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God and the atheist vision of a cold, meaningless universe. Schaeffer writes that only when we abandon our hunt for certainty do we become free to create beauty, give love and find peace. Available now at Amazon.

In 1998, Frank Schaeffer was a bohemian novelist living in “Volvo driving, higher-education worshipping” Massachusetts with two children graduated from top universities. Then his youngest child, straight out of high school, joined the United States Marine Corps. Written in alternating voices by eighteen-year-old John and his father, Frank, Keeping Faith takes readers in riveting fashion through a family’s experience of the Marine Corps: from being broken down and built back up on Parris Island (and being the parent of a child undergoing that experience), to the growth of both father and son and their separate reevaluations of what it means to serve. Available now at Amazon.
