…It Was About Revenge

December 25, 20205 commentsFrank Schaeffer

For Trump’s evangelicals resistance to cultural “progressivism” – “the liberal agenda” – “abortion/gay rights” mattered more than experience, credentials, know-how, integrity, honesty, even Christianity itself. Now-since Trump’s election loss-they even have abandoned U.S. democracy as they claim Trump won. And Trump’s power over evangelicals grows stronger by day, even as his institutional role fades. Why? Because evangelicals judge Trump’s presidency was a resounding God-given win over liberals. Why? Because evangelicals’ embrace of a reality-TV conman was vindicated as a middle finger in liberal’s eyes. This was never about politics, religion, or faith. It was about revenge.

The mainstream media, in the closing days of 2020, have started embracing their role as truth-tellers, not merchants of false balance– 5 horrible years too late! BUT bad habits die hard. Example: “Congress” did not hold up a coronavirus stimulus bill for nine months; the Republican Senate did. So WHY does the media STILL send out so much false equivalency and vagueness? Democrats lie sometimes but Republicans ARE the party of the BIG LIE. Just say it! The media declare that “our politics” have “become polarized.” Nonsense! The truth is that Republicans have become radical anarchists trashing America. Democrats just elected a moderate president as “polarizing” as my mom. NO MORE false equivalence! Just say it!

Dear Media: Learn to speak English! Republicans attempted to thwart an election, tolerate Putin and overlook conclusive evidence of rampant Trump family lawlessness. So STOP calling the GOP “conservative.” The GOP are far-right authoritarian nihilists NOT “conservative.” Media claims of moral equivalency “fairness” reporting on Dems and GOP must end in this era. Republicans are now OPENLY hostile to US democracy. There’s only one political party in the USA-Democrats, and an ongoing shapeshifting ragtag coup against the rule of law-the GOP. Got it?

Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief over a friend’s death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing in God—an atheist who prays. Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief, sharing his innermost thoughts with a lyricism that only great writers of literary nonfiction achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose love for his family, art and life trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God and the atheist vision of a cold, meaningless universe. Schaeffer writes that only when we abandon our hunt for certainty do we become free to create beauty, give love and find peace. Available now at Amazon.

In 1998, Frank Schaeffer was a bohemian novelist living in “Volvo driving, higher-education worshipping” Massachusetts with two children graduated from top universities. Then his youngest child, straight out of high school, joined the United States Marine Corps. Written in alternating voices by eighteen-year-old John and his father, Frank, Keeping Faith takes readers in riveting fashion through a family’s experience of the Marine Corps: from being broken down and built back up on Parris Island (and being the parent of a child undergoing that experience), to the growth of both father and son and their separate reevaluations of what it means to serve. Available now at Amazon.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family Mr. Schaeffer! You give so much of yourself to our country and it is deeply appreciated.

You hit a nerve with this piece you wrote. The mainstream media has consistently failed us. How many millions of Americans continue to believe that “both sides” are to blame for the catastrophic governmental response to Covid-19?

I caught “Morning Joe” the other day. Mike Barnacle called out the Senate GOP AND House Democrats for the failure to deliver Covid relief to Americans. Honest to God are these people insane?

Frank you are the only one making sense in this crazy world. I have come to same conclusions about here & afterlife. I struggle with this all the time. I followed your father through his books, even took a class on one. Please keep writing/posting your thoughts. NEVER liked trump. I saw right away his issues, because my mother was also a Boarder-Line Personality Disorder. Grew up in a house with a crazed mother. I can see BPD people coming. Keep putting the truth out there. Thank You.

My teen years (in the sixties; I’m 67) were spent in evangelical christian gatherings, as an alternative, or addition to, years of Catholic upbringing. But as you say, it all turned sour, and I departed from the movement and all organized religion. It is so refreshing to hear your voice and your insight into the development of the religious right. I admit to being absolutely confused by how that movement became the monstrous, unchristian (as I understand “christian”) force it is now. Please keep speaking out; your clear understanding may help recapture the truth about what it means to be a christian, and surprisingly, what it means to be an American. Thank you for your brave work.

The Media treats the Republican’s with kid’s gloves because the Republicans own most of the companies that advertise. There are a couple of other reasons, but I think that’s the big one. It’s all about the money.

Good morning, Mr. Schaeffer,
Thank you for this blog. Just discovering your writings and will certainly be purchasing (and reading) your books.
To finally understand WHY the evangelicals act the way they have been acting is wonderful. It is simply an act of revenge! That makes all the sense in the world.
Now please consider and discuss “Racism”!
