Falwell Jr., Steps Down Amid Reports of Group Sex (No wonder Trump and Falwell Get Along!)

August 25, 2020No CommentsFrank Schaeffer

Jerry Falwell Jr steps down. Falwell Jr. agreed to resign from Liberty University according to the university’s general counsel, after a series of sordid scandals rocked the school he has led since 2007.

Liberty University was founded in 1971 to “train champions for Christ,” and it turned out to enrich Jerry Falwell Jr., by millions and his family, friends and supporters. Of course he loves Trump! Con-artists stick together.

On Sunday night, a columnist at the conservative Washington Examiner published an exclusive statement from Falwell saying he has been seeking counseling after finding out his wife, Becki, had an affair with a man the couple met in 2012. A “Reuters report also said that, according to Granda, Falwell was in the room watching as his wife and Granda had sex.” (Washington Post)

Robert Jeffress, a Southern Baptist pastor in Dallas who also supports Trump, said he has high regard for the university and has spoken there several times. He said was unaware of Granda’s allegations about Falwell watching his wife having sex with another man.

Falwell’s controversies put a spotlight on the school’s nepotistic profiteering board: his brother Jonathan – pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church; Billy Graham’s grandson evangelist Will Graham; and Penny Nance, president of the conservative group Concerned Women for America.

Franklin Graham says Falwell is a great man and Christian leader. The group sex definition of Christian leadership seems to have expanded since I dropped out of the evangelical world!

Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief over a friend’s death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing in God—an atheist who prays. Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief, sharing his innermost thoughts with a lyricism that only great writers of literary nonfiction achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose love for his family, art and life trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God and the atheist vision of a cold, meaningless universe. Schaeffer writes that only when we abandon our hunt for certainty do we become free to create beauty, give love and find peace. Available now at Amazon.

In 1998, Frank Schaeffer was a bohemian novelist living in “Volvo driving, higher-education worshipping” Massachusetts with two children graduated from top universities. Then his youngest child, straight out of high school, joined the United States Marine Corps. Written in alternating voices by eighteen-year-old John and his father, Frank, Keeping Faith takes readers in riveting fashion through a family’s experience of the Marine Corps: from being broken down and built back up on Parris Island (and being the parent of a child undergoing that experience), to the growth of both father and son and their separate reevaluations of what it means to serve. Available now at Amazon.
