Dear Evangelicals: The Coronavirus has exposed the falsehood of so many of your notions about Trump: that experts are unnecessary; hunches are a substitute for knowledge; competence in administration is overrated; every criticism is a hoax; that Trump is God’s chosen. Now you know that either God is a fake or Trump is. Who are you going to stick with?
It’s hard to think of anything so uniquely suited for exposing Trump and his evangelical supporters’ hubris, ignorance, prejudice, mendacity and catastrophic self-regard than a modern version of a non-negotiable plague. So much for Trump as “God’s anointed one.”
The same lack of trust that pervaded the relationship between the Soviet regime and its people now pervades the relationship between all of sane non-evangelical America and Trump/Pence.
Trump/Pence’s version of “Putting America First” — their slogan — actually means putting real Americans last. Trump betrayed us to Russia, and now he’s betrayed us to a virus.
Here’s the disconnect between evangelical fantasy and reality: Trump’s flippant promise that the coronavirus test is available “to all who need it,” “now” and the sobering reality that kits are in critically low supply.
Trump thinks he can twist everything to suit his needs. He just discovered he cannot twist the truth of nature, science and fact. The real god of “nature” has revealed herself to Trump at last. Her name is NEMESIS.
