Trump denies knowing Satan- then keeps showing up in photos with him.

January 17, 20201 commentFrank Schaeffer

In white evangelical’s support for Trump there was something adolescent with their taste for proud poses and laughably delusional attempts to tie Trump to the fulfillment of the myth of biblical prophecy. Now they deny the profusion of impeachment evidence. This cult is doomed.

White evangelical leaders like Ralph Reed, Franklin Graham and Falwell Jr who are still supporting Trump remind me of merchants who set up booths to sell trinkets to poor children in some strip of wasteland where a couple of kids claimed to have beheld the Virgin Mary. Any hint of holiness is wrecked by the evangelical’s support of Trump. Evangelicals hope that Trump is the “miracle” that will save their backward beliefs from future generation’s ridicule. It’s time to rage at their nation and soul-destroying credulity.

Evangelical support for Trump has become a monument of pagan majesty, an alabaster god more blasphemous than any abortion. Trump drips the blood of the innocent onto the heads of his white nationalist devotees in rituals wherein they are thoroughly baptized into his satanic cult. The joke on Trump is that, forever cast as a seducer, he’s visibly half-cocked and embarrassed by the sway of his own soulless impotence. Never does he appear more naked than when holding forth to evangelicals who revel in his decadence as Trump ejaculates his self-praise on them.

Trump’s political enabling partner is not a willing paramour but an animated doll. Trump: a self-proclaimed leading lover is consoled in the arms of a conditioned, programed, mindless machine known as the white evangelical voter. Evangelical voters have forsaken actuality, with its risks, truths and complexity for the controllable universe of delusional faith in Trump. Evangelicals are now the people of the self-willed and self-perpetuating lie. They cannot be convinced. They must be defeated instead.

Evangelical Trump supporters pay lip service to a new moral dispensation they don’t understand. They act as if Trump is honestly chiding himself for his former sins, even while the evangelical leadership enables Trump as he uses Christian voters the way pedophiles abuse children. May we not live in denial of what we’ve done, but stand up and unite against Trump–this dismal, hollow, worn-out sultan performing his bestial fables, his circus, his neurotic show on us again and again in the the back alley that he’s turned all of America into.

Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief over a friend’s death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing in God—an atheist who prays. Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief, sharing his innermost thoughts with a lyricism that only great writers of literary nonfiction achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose love for his family, art and life trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God and the atheist vision of a cold, meaningless universe. Schaeffer writes that only when we abandon our hunt for certainty do we become free to create beauty, give love and find peace. Available now at Amazon.

In 1998, Frank Schaeffer was a bohemian novelist living in “Volvo driving, higher-education worshipping” Massachusetts with two children graduated from top universities. Then his youngest child, straight out of high school, joined the United States Marine Corps. Written in alternating voices by eighteen-year-old John and his father, Frank, Keeping Faith takes readers in riveting fashion through a family’s experience of the Marine Corps: from being broken down and built back up on Parris Island (and being the parent of a child undergoing that experience), to the growth of both father and son and their separate reevaluations of what it means to serve. Available now at Amazon.

Thanks, Frank. I continue to appreciate your minority report truth-telling. Where some see your critiques of our Evangelical backstory as an attack on faith, I regard your work as a last-ditch defence of a coherent account of ultimate reality (Love). Much love, my friend.
