America: Trump’s Nazi Bunker or Peace?

July 19, 20191 commentFrank Schaeffer

Trump sees the presidency as a giant megaphone for stoking racial and ethnic hatred. He seeks to demonize those who oppose his policies as dangerous extremists out to destroy …. Germany, uh, no, I mean, America. Natural slip there to be understood by anyone with a smidgen of an education in history. Then again there are some who- like Trump’s evangelical supporters- do know some history and yet for them the Nazi era now seems like a golden age.

Children in cages, what could be more of a mirror image of all America is not supposed to be. But that’s the twilit world those like Franklin Graham and Jerry Falwell Jr long for: a whites only, Christian only, “America.”

There’s no way around this: the white evangelical Trump voter now supports an openly racist fascist leader. If this German interloper and his corrupted clan get 4 more years they will double down on their utter corruption combined with an actual fascist regime.

Extreme you say?

No.

Children in cages is extreme.

Telling democratically elected women to “go back” to where they came from is extreme.

The fateful bridge to an actual extreme Nazi regime is already crossed. Trump is looking to divide Americans along color lines, to conjure a zero-sum vision of America in which whites must contend against nonwhites for jobs, wealth, safety and even — citizenship.

Trump lies. Sending citizens “back” or making other “outsiders” wear a yellow star– this is not America. Trump’s own father changed the family name to appear less German. when Germans were out of favor in America. Trump knows this yet has no empathy.

Let’s metaphorically deport the entire Trump clan in 2020 – not back to Germany- but to the trash bin of history where that other German leader resides.

Caught between the beauty of his grandchildren and grief over a friend’s death, Frank Schaeffer finds himself simultaneously believing and not believing in God—an atheist who prays. Schaeffer wrestles with faith and disbelief, sharing his innermost thoughts with a lyricism that only great writers of literary nonfiction achieve. Schaeffer writes as an imperfect son, husband and grandfather whose love for his family, art and life trumps the ugly theologies of an angry God and the atheist vision of a cold, meaningless universe. Schaeffer writes that only when we abandon our hunt for certainty do we become free to create beauty, give love and find peace. Available now at Amazon.

The thing von Clownstick left unspoken at last week’s NSDAP rally was that the four U.S. congresswomen should “Go back to the SHITHOLE countries they came from”.

But that was understood by everyone in the arena.

Thank you for your excellent observations, Mr. Schaeffer.
