Republicans and their white evangelical base know, deep in their hearts, that Cohen’s portrayal of Trump as a “racist,” “a con man” and “a cheat” is true. So it is the truth they fear most because they know that supporting Trump has made them racists, con men and cheats too.
But Republican congressmen could not defend Trump in the Cohen hearing because they are stuck. They are stuck between the white evangelical base and truth. They have a moron base that will never admit that they elected a losing freak of corruption. Why? Because they’ve turned Trump into a theological issue of faith. God gave us Trump evangelicals say.
So Republicans in Congress can’t ever admit the truth about how they actually regard Trump because their base won’t listen. To be a Republican these days is to serve morons and thus to have to pretend to be a loon oneself. With evangelicals as the base of the GOP the Republican leadership have had to perfect the art of dumbing themselves down.

Frank, I am so thankful that you are blogging and tweeting etc. I have your Lucy book along with many others and I so appreciate reading your thoughtful comments and positional supports. I also must say that I keep trying to find those Congresspeople who are the practical and pragmatic people in their approach and voting on issues. We get caught up so much with the fringe politicians in every party that we aren’t giving the mainstream keel of our political ship its due. I also see that we need to continually remember that we (in the USA) are a part and not the whole of this planet and that we need to be taking a more global approach to all the issues of the day and our earthly future.
Thank you- I appreciate the intellectual stimulation towards a practical reality.

more than just facts about authoritarians, but understanding and insight into why they act
the way they do. Which is often mind-boggling. How can they revere those who gave
their lives defending freedom and then support moves to take that freedom away? How
can they go on believing things that have been disproved over and over again, and
disbelieve things that are well established? How can they think they are the best people in
the world, when so much of what they do ought to show them they are not? Why do their
leaders so often turn out to be crooks and hypocrites? Why are both the followers and the
leaders so aggressive that hostility is practically their trademark? By the time
you have finished this book, I think you will understand the reasons…. <<
