With white evangelicals’ help the GOP enjoys more power than at any moment since the New Deal. With all this power they have done nothing at all except give billionaires more money, white supremacists more power, elected a world class racist and misogynist named Trump and insulted all patriots.
One overriding reason white evangelicals (still) support Trump is that he is “ordained by God.” As he brings chaos, that’s just terrific! Bring on the end times! They want planetary destruction to hasten the “rapture” and “return of Christ.”
As Nelle Smith / Religion Dispatches writes:
Consider the refrain “in the world, but not of it,” the insistence that earth is just a place of trial and suffering before the final destination of heaven. Consider the popularity of Left Behind, the wildly popular book series that paints the destruction of human life as regrettable but necessary collateral damage in Christian victory. Or consider a milder form: “God is in control,” the ubiquitous phrase used all over social media to comfort those scared for their lives after the election of Donald Trump.
Given the consistency with which white evangelicals as a whole have lent their support to Trump—and right-wing candidates and policies more generally—it’s far past time to own up to the fact that their bad image is, in many respects, the reality.
And besides the allure of chaos there is deep seated white evangelical traditions of racism. The Southern evangelical approach to reading the Bible was forged in the context of their defenses of slavery. Understand that and you’ll understand why Trump is president. And yes, it was white evangelical preachers who ran the KKK in the 1920s. Nothing’s changed. Now they love Trump.
Looking at Trump’s life of multiple porn-star type entanglements, 3 divorces, and bragging about assaulting women Trump seems to be one of those unfortunate people to whom sex long since became a medium for anesthetizing pain rather than expressing love.
Trump’s Republicans borrowed $1.9 trillion dollars to slash taxes for multinational corporations and the GOP Koch brother/Robert Mercer donor class. Now they’re preparing to GUT Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security under the guise of “fiscal responsibility.” This is a recipe for social chaos. Do evangelicals care?
No. Jesus is on the way. Who cares about deficits let alone racial equality, women’s rights, the future well-being of gay men and women or anything else including the health of our planet?
The few evangelicals not looking forward eagerly for doom, look back to an era that might as well have been the Apocalypse for anyone not male or white. The era in history that many Trumped white evangelicals look back to as “great” was in fact the same era in our history that was living hell for non-whites, for many women and for all gay men and women.
Evangelical white Trump supporters are practical nihilists convinced that the end times are upon us, that the planet will soon be consumed in blood and fire. What’s worse, they believe that this is somehow a good thing.
And that is why evangelicals cheer as Trump causes chaos. They see failure as part of God’s plan. It smacks of fulfilled biblical prophecy about just how bad everything will get heralding Jesus’ return.
“God is in control,” say white evangelical Trump toadies. No God’s not. Voters in November are.
Work for sane Democrats and sweep these loons and their sick evil leader away.
