White Evangelicals can’t hide from what they did to America giving us Trump. He doesn’t hide his pettiness, bury his petulance, and distract us from his vulgarity and bigotry. He’s too needy an exhibitionist to wear a mask. The Evangelical’s favorite man-child leaves nowhere for his supporters to hide.
It’s not merely that this emperor has no clothes. This emperor has no soul, that is, if proof of having a soul is empathy for others.
After One Year, Trump stands before us naked. His daily lies, his fake hair, teeth, smile, “genius” can’t hide the truth: America is in the grip of a phony monster, too petty to even be efficiently evil…
Trump’s truths are found in his lies. No voters may claim ignorance. White Evangelicals knew! Ethics? Character? Before the 2016 “win” these were on stark display: the fraud of Trump University, the denigration of John McCain, the “Access Hollywood” tape.
White evangelicals sold us to the Devil with their eyes wide open. They are still selling us.
Between covering up past corruption, working to enrich himself and his family from the presidency, lying, tweeting insults and watching TV, Trump was just too engaged being TRUMP to even govern. Result? Our government is literally shut down on the very day marking One Year of having this fool as our “president.”
Many of Trump’s most influential evangelical supporters have stood by Trump even after the “shithole” remarks indirectly led to shut down:
Pastor Robert Jeffress, who is a member of the president’s evangelical advisory board, said the comments were “right on target,” while Pastor Mark Burns invoked the Trump administration’s “America First” agenda, saying “black people in America are suffering.” Franklin Graham said the president was being “beaten up for saying something that he says he didn’t say.”
Mavis Staples, please call your office! We need a reformation and revival! Come to think of it one is underway: It is (of course) led by a black minister William J. Barber II. He writes:
First, we must recognize the need for indigenously led, state-based, state-government focused, deeply moral, deeply constitutional, anti-racist, anti-poverty, pro-justice, pro-labor, and transformative movement building. There’s no shortcut around this. We must build a movement from the bottom up. We must build relationships at the state level because that’s where most of the extremism of the current-day deconstructionists are happening.
White Evangelicals may no longer care, but for most Americans, character still matters. At some point, those on the white Christian right will pay the price for denying Jesus.
Have fun in the trash heap of history, White Evangelicals. After 2018-2020 elections you’ll just be a bad memory just like your delusional mentor Trump. Fortunately for America – and Christianity’s historic reputation – we have black leaders like Barber, black women voters, and Hispanics ready to lead us out of Trump’s swamp… and possibly even back to sanity, maybe even to Jesus.
