“For the record,” said Roy Moore’s wife Kayla Moore, speaking at a rally for “Women For Moore” on the Alabama State House Steps about reaction to her husband’s alleged child-molesting scandal “it’s about 90 percent positive… The people of Alabama understand what’s going on here!”
Never was a truer or more unintentionally ironic word spoken. They do indeed.
Try to unpack this: Kayla Moore just described her allegedly pedophile husband who was twice removed from the state Supreme Court for breaking the law, as a “Christian fighting for the acknowledgment of God, for the Second Amendment and for life.”
Kayla Moore charged Roy Moore’s opponent Jones is an “ultra-liberal” former Barack Obama delegate whose support for abortion, gun restrictions and transgender rights pits him “against everything we in Alabama believe and stand for!”
All too true and why Alabama is a backward mess that rates lowest on every educational economic chart.
Kayla Moore is on to something else too — unintentionally — about the state of the union: “All of the very same people who were attacking President Trump are also attacking us–I personally think he owes us a thank you.” she said. “Have you noticed you’re not hearing too much about Russia?”
Again all too true: any distraction is welcomed by the Trump criminal clan to delay a day of legal/criminal reckoning.
Kayla Moore has shared several Facebook posts with unverified and baseless claims suggesting the Washington Post was offering to pay for accusations against her husband. This was seconded by Moore’s supporters.
Jennifer Case, a speaker on the Alabama State Capitol steps at the same Women for Moore rally declared that Moore “is the closest thing to a founding father that we’ve had in our time.”
She too was ironically unintentionally bitterly correct: Jefferson repeatedly raped his 14-yr-old slave.
In Alabama half the residents are evangelical Christians; double the national average according to Pew Research, and there’s a struggle going on between those who believe in moral standards and those wanting to win the political war “for Jesus” by accepting the nation’s and Moore’s “flaws.”
How can this be happening?
Here’s how: Trumped American evangelicals have long since decided that the only way to win the culture war is to have their churches permanently uncouple from character and moral accountability. If a candidate supports the gun lobby and says gays will burn in hell and that Democrats murder babies- that’s good enough, no matter what else he does to a child or woman, let alone to the poor, or children needing healthcare.
Speaking of ironic endings… American evangelicals are not going out with a whimper but with a Big Bang of moral relativism. They’ve decided that Jesus’ (little known!) command to keep the Republicans in power no matter what, justifies embracing men whose behavior they once would have condemned.
Remember how shocked Christians like Billy Graham were when they heard Nixon’s tapes- his foul language, his racist remarks? Now as long as you’re a “pro-life” Republican with an “A” rating by the NRA/gun-lobby provider of weapons of mass destruction to domestic abuse perpetrators, evangelicals will vote for you no matter how many children you raped or women you grabbed without their permission.
Terry Batton heads Christian Renewal and Development Ministries in Georgetown Ga, and is yet another evangelical moral relativist. He said, “With Roy Moore, if he’s guilty of what they’re talking about, the question is, has he repented of that? If he has, it should be forgotten.”
So evangelical forgiveness is combined with the new theology of power… Jesus died to forgive sins… as long as it’s a Republican in power who needs votes?
Ralph Reed of the Christian Coalition said in 1998 that Bill Clinton’s White House affair with Monica Lewinsky rendered him unfit to serve. After the release of videotape showing Trump boasting of grabbing women by their genitals Reed defended Trump. And Reeds’ reaction to Roy Moore? Silence, or forgiving the sinner… whatever.
1980 Watershed: Evangelicals choose between born-again Baptist Sunday school teacher Carter and an actor who signed the most liberal abortion bill in America in CA and whose wife practiced astrology. They pick Reagan.
2017 Watershed: Evangelicals pick assaulter Trump and then later defend Roy Moore over ANY Democrat.
I define the Trump/Moore 2016-17 years as the endgame of evangelical relativism. It began when Christians rallied around Clarence Thomas saying there was nothing believable about Anita Hill’s charges but with Paula Jones and Bill Clinton they came to her defense, legally and financially.
If it’s a woman evangelicals always — but always — believe the man… as long as he’s a “conservative” Republican abuser, not a Liberal abuser, even if she’s a fellow evangelical! Anita Hill was part of the Christian world on the faculty at Oral Roberts University (I met her when I was still a religious right activist and spoke there) yet there was a wholesale evangelical-led effort to delegitimize what she was saying.
Why are claims doubted and systematically undermined by conservatives even when they’re made by a conservative Christian women? Ask the Apostle Paul: “Let the women keep silent in the churches for they are not permitted to speak but let them subject themselves.”
Trump couldn’t have said it better as he grabbed another man’s wife’s genitals.
Don’t be surprised by evangelical women supporting Trump/Moore. Thousands of women opposed women’s suffrage. Many women in conservative Christian settings still celebrate notions of male authority. Then again, some Jews went along with the Nazis in the early 1930s…
Breaking News: A new poll shows nearly 40% of Evangelical Christians in Alabama say they’re now MORE LIKELY (yes you read that right) to vote for Roy Moore AFTER multiple allegations that he molested children.
This is Trumpian logic at work, combined with perpetual victimhood bred in evangelicals raised on the belief that “The World” is against “everything we believe.” So if the same “fake news” that says evolution is true and that climate change is true says one of our own raped a child- it ain’t so!
In case you missed it, here’s Part One of my appearance this morning on AM Joy on MSNBC, discussing the Moral Relativism of the New Evangelical Republican Party, who would rather put all of their support behind and proudly vote for an alleged pedophile (disgraced Judge Roy Moore) and a sexual abuser of multiples of women (BOTH disgraced Judge Roy Moore AND Donald Trump), just to keep hold of power and ensure that no “Evil Democrat” ever wins. Part Two of my appearance this morning on AM Joy on MSNBC, discussing the Moral Relativism of the New Evangelical Republican Party. In the case of disgraced Judge Roy Moore, one thing I’d never heard of is a man accused by this many credible people that white evangelical Christians, 83% of them, march out and vote for because they have traded a lust for power and revenge on what they regard as a liberal elite for the least vestige of moral principle.
