Today is Thanksgiving, and apart from all the baggage that this holiday has accumulated for so many of us over the years, I do want to reflect on what I am thankful for, in addition to my friends, family and 5 amazing, smart, talented, and beautiful grandchildren, to whom my new book “Letter to Lucy: A Manifesto of Creative Redemption—In the Age of Trump, Fascism and Lies” is dedicated. To start, my Road Trip to Take Back the House in 2018 has put me in contact with some truly inspirational Americans; progressive Democrats who are not content to remain seated in the Age of Trump, Fascism and Lies, but are standing up and fighting for our future.
I’m thankful for honest, hard-working Americans like “Ironstache” himself, Randy Bryce, an iron-worker fighting to unseat Trump’s smarmy, spineless Tax-Cut pimp, Paul Ryan, in Wisconsin’s First District. I’m thankful for school teacher and mother of seven, Jenny Marshall, who is working hard to replace apathetic Trump lover Virginia Foxx and create greater opportunities and brighter futures for the people, especially the children, of North Carolina’s Fifth District. I’m thankful for Laura Oatman, a LEED-certified architect and rescue-dog lover who is running, not only to unseat Russian Comrade Dana Rohrabacher in CA-48, but to openly address climate change and create a more progressive and inclusive economy that works for us all. I’m thankful for progressive political activist Howie Klein, a record executive and blogger who is using his voice and his platform to shine a light and raise awareness of these forward-thinking Americans.
If you haven’t seen them yet, you can catch all of my interviews with these folks on my blog: www.frankschaefferblog.com
Which brings me to my latest interview with Retired US Marine Colonel Doug Applegate, who is running in California’s 49th Congressional District to get rid of entrenched multi-millionaire Trump crony Darrell Issa. Doug has been running against Issa since 2015 and needs our help to seal the deal and help Take Back the House in 2018. We talked about family, the issues facing REAL Americans–that is, ALL Americans–the disjointed political messaging coming from both the Right and the Left, and what it really means to serve. I’m thankful for Colonel Doug Applegate, who proves that patriotism, morals, honor and sacrifice aren’t just hollow buzz-words to be thrown about by a cynical band of plutocrats to steal elections, but real lived-values that belong to ALL of us, which we all can share.
So while you’re passing the gravy today at a table you may not be too enthused to be seated at, be thankful that there are honest, hard-working, thoughtful, PROGRESSIVE individuals out there fighting on your behalf, and yes, even your crazy Trump-loving uncle’s behalf, because our descent into madness via Trump, Fascism and Lies can only be reversed by working together for our Creative Redemption; only a return to truth and beauty can bring about a better future for us all.
