It was a long time ago when I read it. For unrepentant criminals or other extremely antisocial behavior you offer them a choice: A complete mind wipe with later retraining or banishment to Coventry. Am I understanding Francis Schaeffer’s implication here? That 81 % of Evangelicals voted for Trump because they believe he will help to usher in The Second Coming? That’s like voting for the Antichrist (or an archtype thereof) so that Jesus will come back. But all they’ve really done is given aid and comfort to the Devil. WOW! They sure do pin a lot on their particular interpretation of the Bible. And in so doing, they totally forgot about Matthew 22:36-40 where Jesus tells us that ALL the law and the prophets are contained in loving God and our neighbor.
By the way, he grew up a few blocks from me. A few years older. He was notorious for having been one of the most psychopathic bullies our neighborhood has ever known. While it is probably true that the Greek Philosophers, the Bible, and the science fiction authors Asimov and Heinlein have probably got a quote for everything, I will refer you to (I believe) Heinlein’s short story “Coventry”. It was a long time ago when I read it. For unrepentant criminals or other extremely antisocial behavior you offer them a choice: A complete mind wipe with later retraining or banishment to Coventry. A vast area (probably “out west somewhere” with a Trump variety wall around it. Sink or swim. If they ever want to come back they can apply for reinstatement which is a comprehensive psychological test. If you pass, fine, if you don’t, back you go.
As a white, self-accepting (now!) gay man who grew up in evangelical, Charismatic Christianity, I could not agree more with his assessment in this video. Well said! Like Frank, I’ve lived the evangelical delusion…
Am I understanding Francis Schaeffer’s implication here? That 81 % of Evangelicals voted for Trump because they believe he will help to usher in The Second Coming? That’s like voting for the Antichrist (or an archtype thereof) so that Jesus will come back. But all they’ve really done is given aid and comfort to the Devil. WOW! They sure do pin a lot on their particular interpretation of the Bible. And in so doing, they totally forgot about Matthew 22:36-40 where Jesus tells us that ALL the law and the prophets are contained in loving God and our neighbor.
By the way, he grew up a few blocks from me. A few years older. He was notorious for having been one of the most psychopathic bullies our neighborhood has ever known. A kid who would smash a baseball bat and break it against the fence if he struck out, throw the ball into The woods, steal the other kids toys, keep whatever he found while daring the owner to fight him for it, eventually to be sent away to military school because he was and incorrigible threat to the neighborhood. His family bought him out of so many scandals, he made Mike Tyson look like a choirboy. He grew up to be president.
It is interesting to me that so many commenters here are engaging an apparent core supporter, ignoring the very fundamental advise Mr. Schaeffer provides us. Reason is irrelevant. They are immune to it for the reasons he outlines so eloquently.
Also, I believe *trump knows he’s toast from Mueller’s investigation and the fact his group is focusing on crimes that cannot be pardoned by him. He’s making a mad dash to make as many changes that will benefit him and his family in the decades to come – that is if they stay out of jail.
