Why would Trump hire a right-wing fundamentalist Pat Robertson clone/follower “First Amendment lawyer” famous for claiming white evangelicals are the victims of left wing media conspiracies (and for spreading other delusional fables) rather than a reputable defense attorney? Because Trump saw Sekulow on Fox NEWS!
Trump watched as Sekulow praised him and Trump loved it! His new ass-kisser was hired by Fox as a “legal analyst” and Trump (like Chance the Gardener of “Being There”) watches TV!
Trump saw Sekulow “defend” him on TV one night. That made Sekulow the choice for a man who demands “loyalty” rather than integrity in his lackeys.
Back when I was an evangelical far right “leader” I met Jay Sekulow when I was on the 700 Club with Pat Robertson. I remember a secret meeting I had with Pat back in the day that paved the way for Pat to hire Sekulow. He wasn’t at our meeting but we set out Pat’s new “Christian civil liberties” agenda at that time. A little later Pat hired Sukulow to carry out his “save America from secular humanists, gays and women” via court action.
In the early 1980s, Dad, (Francis Schaeffer) and I were with Pat Robertson in that secret meeting Pat called to help a follower of my dad’s called John Whitehead, set up the Rutherford Institute, a (then new) group that was going to be the “Christian answer to the ACLU.” Then Pat and John W had a falling out and Pat decided to go it alone and hired Jay Sekulow to start a group Pat could control and make money from.
The agenda John Whitehead developed (he’s still going) was borrowed wholesale by Pat and Jay. “Standing up to the ACLU” was so popular that several dozen other Christian civil liberties groups (for instance one started by Focus on the Family) were springing up at the same time as Rutherford was. But with Pat’s vast empire behind it Jay’s group was the one that took off.
It’s widely reported that Trump had been unable to hire any actual top law firms to represent him.
Reputable lawyers know Trump will Tweet and blather against their advice and hang them out to dry. As Raw Story, reported one lawyer said the reasons for refusing to represent Trump were: “The guy won’t pay and he won’t listen.” Thus the reputable defense attorneys were “unavailable.” So Trump dove into the evangelical fundamentalist madhouse to find a “lawyer.”
Jay Sekulow, is a familiar presence for viewers of Fox News and Christian TV. His specialty is not the law. Sekulow is famous for his claims that American evangelical Christians are victims and a persecuted minority. According to Sekulow and company, The Gays are out to take over the world and The Feminists are in a plot to destroy motherhood.
Christians are victims! They are victims of science, facts and history!
These days Sekulow is best known for his American Center for Law and Justice. As I noted it was founded by Pat Robertson to raise money with to “protect Christians from the secular humanist elites taking over our country.” Pat has “protected” the evangelicals (if you’ll send him money) from abortionists, communists, homosexuals, women, Democrats and the liberal media as well as from science, education, facts and Opinions-Other-Than-Pat’s! He’s parleyed his “protection” racket in a personal billion-plus empire.
The American Center for Law and Justice became a specialist in bigotry, It’s famous for its work against gay marriage. Sekulow and the American Center for Law and Justice have also been heavily involved in the Christian right’s global project to criminalize homosexuality in Africa. According to observers, that has encouraged violence against gays in Africa, as well as inspiring laws threatening prison for gays- as Mother Jones reported on this in 2012.
Sekulow is all about FAMILY VALUES! So he is now representing the thrice-divorced habitual liar and Putin prodigy, sexual assault specialist Trump.
So far, that’s not going too well for Trump re his new evangelical anti-gay extremist “lawyer.” Sekulow made the rounds on all the Sunday talk shows last Sunday. He said that despite the president’s tweeting that he was under investigation, he was really wasn’t. On Fox News, with Chris Wallace Sekulow was asked why, if the president isn’t under investigation, he would go after Rosenstein, describing the situation as a “witch hunt.” Sekulow lost his poise and began explaining that Trump had taken the advice of the attorney general and his deputy and “now the Department of Justice is investigating him.”
Wallace called him on it:
Chris Wallace: Well, but you don’t know that he isn’t under investigation now, do you?
Jay Sekulow: Well, no one’s notified us that he is. So I — I can’t read people’s minds, but I can tell you this: We have not been notified that there’s an investigation to the president of the United States. So that — nothing has changed in that regard since James Comey’s testimony.
Wallace: Well, you don’t know that he’s not under investigation again, sir. I mean you might —
Sekulow: You know, I can’t read the mind — you’re right, Chris, I can’t read the minds of the special prosecutor.
Sekulow, Pat Robertson and Trump all understand each other perfectly. All three are scam artists. All three have become rich making empty promises—make America Great, I’ll teach you to make money at Trump U, save the USA for Jesus—just send me your money!
According to Right Wing Watch, which has been tracking Sekulow for years, Tony Mauro wrote an article for The Legal Times entitled “The Secrets of Jay Sekulow” which examined how “through the ACLJ and a string of interconnected nonprofit and for-profit entities, [Sekulow] has built a financial empire that generates millions of dollars a year and supports a lavish lifestyle — complete with multiple homes, chauffeur-driven cars, and a private jet that he once used to ferry Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.”
Sekulow runs two multimillion-dollar “nonprofits” (the Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism and the American Center for Law and Justice). Like Pat Robertson who turned his “ministry” into a family empire run by his son, Sekulow’s wife, brother, sister-in-law and two sons dominate the boards of both organizations, collecting millions of dollars through complicated legal structures.
Sound familiar? Ivanka and Jared must understand this guy perfectly!
