Here’s why we need to punish United Airlines and send a message to our Trumpian corporate masters: United Airlines overbooked a flight. So what? So this– A man was dragged and bloodied off the plane. This represents everything that’s wrong with cooperate America. United must be made into an example. And by the way Trump needs to tell us again why he wants to deregulate corporate giants and put both consumers and the environment at their mercy.
Flights are overbooked so that airlines may increase profits.
The disturbing scene captured on cellphone videos by United Airlines passengers on Sunday went beyond the usual unjust nightmare of travel on overbooked flights. At least two passengers documented the physical brutality. Tyler Bridges, a passenger on Sunday’s flight who posted a video to Twitter, said in a telephone interview on Monday with the New York Times that “it felt like something the world needed to see.”
The situation became uncomfortable for the United employees who then got on board and took the “vacated” seats. Mr. Bridges said they were berated by passengers and told they should be ashamed. But the rest of us need to do more.
How about make this a moment when we say “NO”?
At one point, the authorities and medics surrounded the man after he was dragged and gave him tissues for his mouth, which was bleeding witnesses said. In a statement, Oscar Munoz, the chief executive of United Airlines, called the episode “an upsetting event.” He said the company apologized for having to “reaccommodate” the customers. Using Orwellian “Newspeak” like that one might call a rape “unaccommodating lovemaking.”
According to the Times, a young couple was told to leave first, Bridges recalled. “They begrudgingly got up and left,” he said. Then an older man, who refused. “He says, ‘Nope. I’m not getting off the flight. I’m a doctor and have to see patients tomorrow morning,’” Bridges said. The man became angry as the manager persisted, Bridges said, eventually yelling. “He said, more or less, ‘I’m being selected because I’m Chinese.’”
A police officer boarded. Then a second and a third.
Bridges then began recording, as did another passenger — as the officers leaned over the man, a lone holdout in his window seat. “Can’t they rent a car for the pilots?” another passenger asks in the videos. “My God!” someone yells — not for the first time. He goes limp after hitting the floor.
There is only one way to change the way corporate America treats us: Make an example of United Airlines.
